
In the summer when you're on the water there is no-where to hide from the sun. Unlike the freshwater of a lake, salty sea water is not too refreshing to splash in one's face. You're cool and relaxed in the winter. The solitude is multiplied, as the summer vacationers have evaporated.
The kayak handles well in the thin crust ice. It lifts over-top of the ice and breaks through. Continued going becomes a matter of propulsion; you've got to be able to puncture the ice with the paddle blades.
